Dekko Headset Worth Getting Excited About

With the introduction of the virtual reality (VR) headset, the Oculus Rift, this month there’s been much talk and anticipation about VR in our near future.

But while plenty people are talking about mainly good VR gaming, one company is talking about augmented reality using smartphones and integrating it into our daily (practical) lives.

We just learned that Dekko has secured a $3.2 million dollar push to create what appears to be a lightweight headset that interacts with our real environment via apps.

So it can direct you around, using your maps app. You can communicate on social networking sites like Twitter and Instagram using your gaze. Stuff like that. It’s in development. But very cool.

Champions League Final to be Broadcast in 3D

European sporting fans watching the Heineken Cup today in 3D may also be happy about this.

We know, perhaps if you like rugby it may not be cool to also like soccer. But if you like the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, the most prestigious soccer league in Europe, you can watch the final in 3D this year.

It will be offered by Hungarian direct-to-home company UPC and shown on Sport 1 network to viewers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary.

This is the first transmission of the game in 3D by UPC. The UEFA final features two German clubs this year, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The game will be broadcast from Wembley Stadium in London on May 25.

One thing is for certain, people will watch this. Apparently the 2011 final drew 178.7 million television viewers.

Talks of Angry Birds the 3D Movie

While we might not have heard about an Angry Birds 3D game for your smartphone yet, which we discussed earlier this year, today we’ve heard that there are plans to make a 3D animated film based on the game.

Rovio, the Finnish company who is responsible for making Angry Birds, appears to be partnering with Sony Pictures for the film. David Maisel (Iron Man 2) and John Cohen (Despicable Me) are said to be producing the movie. They have no director just yet.

Sony has expressed their positivity about bringing the game to the big screen. But oddly enough, it is said that Angry Birds 3D may not hit movie theaters until 2016.

BYU Researchers Work with Adobe for 3D

An interesting thing was brought up today about the lack of 3D photography out there. Basically, folks seem curious why we haven’t seen more 3D photography in the mainstream.

The mainstream meaning, like, on Facebook. The main problem lies in the fact that 3D photos cannot be saved in the JPEG format. Typically 3D files are stored under JPS or MPO. And these files aren’t uploadable to Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, or Twitter.

That kind of makes 3D photography a lonely hobby. The files aren’t able to be manipulated in Photoshop yet, either. But today we heard that researchers at BYU are working with Adobe to make this happen, perhaps in the next Adobe package upgrade. We’ll keep you posted on that.

Ubiquity Studios in Irvine to Expand

The television studio in Irvine, Calif. known as Ubiquity Studios, a state-of-the-art production facility has hired Brett Tomberlin, formerly with The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as VP of Development and Production.

Tomberlin has also worked with Warner Bros. Studios. Ubiquity Studios is a 30,000 sq. foot facility, having the largest soundstages between L.A. and San Diego, Calif.

Ubiquity has a large, extensive client list including: Vitamin Water, Sony, Chevrolet, Nike, ESPN, NFL Films, Skrillex, Dickies, MGM, and Visa. Yes, we said Skrillex.

Earlier this month, Ubiquity entered into a merger agreement with Ubiquity Broadcasting Corporation, a publicly-held Nevada corporation.

Stereofocus Rig hits Kickstarter

Last week we discovered a pretty savvy design for a new mounting kit that actually solves the problem of switching from portrait to landscape when shooting 3D.

It’s designed by a company called Stereofocus, and they followed us back on Twitter. The rigs aren’t cheap, and hopefully that means they aren’t cheaply made. There are three different designs: a Kipphead, a 3D Rig-Slider, and a Handheld Rig.

Stereofocus has a nice demonstrative video along with their Kickstarter campaign. If you’re interested in capturing 3D, check it out.

Stereofocus, a British company, looks to raise nearly $150 thousand dollars for their product campaign.

May 3D Blu-ray Release List Slim

With such a big month in April for 3D Blu-rays, once again it looks like we’ve hit a slump in the number of movies that will be released to 3D Blu-ray in May.

For starters we have Gerard Butlers action film Gamer, which came out about one week ago. However, Gamer was the only 3D Blu-ray released in the first week of May.

Next, the grotesque horror that was released in theaters earlier this year, Texas Chainsaw 3D, was released on 3D Blu-ray yesterday. However, it was the only 3D Blu-ray released this week.

Now get this. In almost two weeks we will get Despicable Me, starring the voice of Steve Carell, on 3D Blu-ray. This 3D Blu-ray comes out just in time for the sequel’s release in theaters and on 3D IMAX. But other than those three films no other major 3D Blu-ray discs are said to be coming out in May.

In other words, it might be a good month to beef up your collection at home.

New Pac-Man Game for PS3, Xbox 360, 3DS

It was recently announced that the old Pac-Man franchise is at it again. The new game will be called Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures.

We note it because A. Pac-Man is a quintessential classic game and B. because it seems to be a trend for major titles to hit the Nintendo 3DS lately. And we like old titles.

Specifically, we just spoke about Donkey Kong’s new addition to the 3DS format, and last week Sonic the Hedgehog was said to be coming available to 3DS players in Japan.

We should touch upon the new game’s PS3 and Xbox versions as well. A trailer is viewable online. It looks like 3D fun, and Pac-Man still chomps on some ghosts, with a running start.

Jack Daniel’s Honey Shows 3D Ad at New Star Wars Film

The new Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness 3D, will be released in theaters on May 17. It is already receiving good reviews from multiple sources.

Some people have been lucky enough to get a sneak peak. It has also been stated recently that the film will feature a 3D ad for Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey whiskey.

The commercial was converted into 3D by Prime Focus World. A spokesperson from Jack Daniel’s said he’s excited because 3D gives it more of a “wow” factor.

It makes sense. After all, you can purchase Jack Daniels frozen drinks at some theaters. A win win.

Wolfenstein 3D Available on PSN and XBLM with New Rating

Wolfenstein 3D, formerly of Activision, are now published by Bethesda. So anyone monitoring the game on their Xbox 360 or PS3 might have noticed a couple changes today.

By the way it will be available May 31.

Bethesda told sources that when a game changes publisher, the ESRB rating does not follow the game. Instead, the game has to go through ESRB processes once more.

Anyone who is familiar with the old first person shooter that may have started it all might already have guessed that it’s got an ‘M.’ No big deal.

If you’re like us you’re just jazzed to hear that Wolfenstein 3D is coming to Xbox Live Marketplace (XBLM) and the PlayStation Network (PSN). Wolfenstein: The New Order will also debut later this year.
