Metallica 3D Film Trailer Viewable Online

May 23rd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

metallica

A thought just occurred. It’s been 21 years since the Guns N’ Roses/Metallica tour. We didn’t make it there, but we certainly dreamed about it.

And here we are. It’s 2013, and both Guns ‘N Roses and Metallica are working on 3D concert film releases. It’s purely coincidental we suppose, but perhaps still worth noting.

The trailer for the Metallica 3D film is viewable now online. It features Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) in a bad car wreck, followed by a riotous chase sequence that segues into Metallica on stage shredding through Master of Puppets.

While the Guns ‘N Roses film release date remains vague, the Metallica film, titled Through the Never, is said to hit IMAX 3D in North America on September 27. Then an expanded release will occur October 4.

Xbox One 4K Ability-Extent Remains a Mystery

May 23rd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

xbox_logo

Much like by the way Microsoft renames their latest gaming system, we are baffled by whether or not the new Xbox will support 4K graphics in the games.

The Sony PlayStation 4 group has in fact disclosed that the games for the system will not support 4K graphics, although the system will allow for users to play 4K video content.

The same applies for the Xbox One at this point. The system will support both 3D and 4K formats. More than likely we’ll see some exciting 3D gaming. But Microsoft has this temporary advantage now it appears, since folks don’t seem to be clear on whether or not the games will support 4K.

Then again, it may be some years before most people ditch their working HDTVs for a new 4K. (Sigh.)

One More iOS App with Anaglyphic Lens

May 23rd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

kitcam_logo

We’ve discovered another iPhone app that allows you to capture and share anaglyphic 3D images.

The Kitcam app for your iPhone isn’t exactly brand new, but still currently gaining steam. It reminds us of the Hipstamatic camera app, but it may actually be even more complex than that one.

Kitcam makes Mirrorgram look kind of trivial, since it is loaded with many more features. On the other hand, easy-to-use is a good thing. So both Mirrorgram and Kitcam are indeed worth adding to your mobile photography arsenal.

We forgot to mention yesterday that anaglyphic glasses are easy to obtain. Red/cyan or green/magenta anaglyphic 3D glasses may be purchased on Amazon for under $5 dollars in most instances.

Workable 3D Photography on Your iOS

May 22nd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

mirrorgram_logo

It’s funny that we’ve read much lately on how inaccessible 3D photography is in this day and age, since last night we discovered an easy way to take and share anaglyphic 3D photos on our iPhone!

If you happen to be an Instagrammer, this is totally for you (and surely don’t forget to follow us at “gefisch”). An iPhone app called Mirrorgram actually released an update in late 2012 that allows the user to add a 3D filter to their photos.

The app was originally released for adding symmetry effects to your photos. But after toying around with it for a little while last night, we discovered the 3D filter, as well as some other cool filters like “Toon” and “8-bit.”

This essentially turns the iPhone into a 3D-capable device, and allows you to share 3D photos without any of the hassle that 3D cameras are said to pose you with. Mirrorgram is a free download, and the 3D filter will cost you $.99 cents.

Sega Drops Another Classic Title on the 3DS

May 22nd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

altered_beast_cover

While we’ve actually heard that the Sonic the Hedgehog re-release had an unsatisfactory 3D effect on the 3DS platform, Sega continues to roll out the old catalog on the Nintendo handheld system.

This week we hear that Altered Beast, actually an old classic Sega Genesis title, where the user scrolls right to defeat monstrous creatures. Along the way, the user gains power-ups that transform him from a small man into a powerful beast.

It’s a pretty interesting concept, kind of like Mario meets Castlevania. Altered Beast for the 3DS will be released as 3D Altered Beast. It comes out May 29 in Japan as an eShop download. It will cost about $6 bucks.

Russian 3D Popularity Continues to Grow

May 22nd, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

Russia has been in our 3D scope regularly over the past couple months.

First, there was news about the growth of IMAX 3D in Russia, then we learned of the film Stalingrad 3D, and next of James Cameron working to air the ballet Swan Lake in 3D live across the globe next month.

Today, we’ve heard that a new Russian 3D animated film, The Snow Queen, has been picked up by Vertical Entertainment at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is directed by Maxim Sveshnikov and Vlad Barbe. Barbe and Vadim Sveshnikov wrote the script.

The film is produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). The Snow Queen is about a girl who has to save her brother from an evil witch who’s covered the world in ice. There is already a sequel in the works.

3D Film Takes Us to First Everest Expedition

May 21st, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

beyond_the_edge_movie

Beyond the Edge 3D is a new thriller being produced by the Avatar crew re-creating Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 ascent of Mount Everest.

The film intends to portray a recreation of the original expedition with old photographs and merge that with new 3D footage by the same method used to convert Titanic into 3D.

The film crew has actually been shooting on Everest. They’re said to have an emergency helicopter on site at all times because the weather can change on the mountain in a snap. Other footage is being taken in the New Zealand Alps, where many Everest climbers train for the big one.

The remarkable thing about the 1953 expedition is that these men didn’t have the gear that people have today. We already think this movie is going to be good.

Third Gen Xbox Revealed Tonight

May 21st, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

xbox_logo

It seems like it just wouldn’t be right if Sony were to release the new PlayStation 4 this year without any competition from the other guys.

That being said, Microsoft Xbox is holding a reveal event later today for the new Xbox. Both are speculated to release within one week of each other during the holiday season. Get ready for another grueling Black Friday on November 29.

Reports of rumors have been published about the Xbox that it may be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games. It may also feature digital recording software.

But the coolest rumor we believe is the one about the special 3D glasses that may come with the machine, integrating not only 3D, but augmented reality stuff like mixing game with the real world.

Uganda Sees Country’s First 3D Theater

May 21st, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

magic_cinema

That’s right, the African country of Uganda now has a 3D cinema, located at the Metroplex Shopping centre in Naalya, said to be along the Northern by-pass.

While most of us have probably never visited Uganda, this article serves to show the widespread effect of 3D movies growing in popularity.

Our source says that he observed “female patrons that were seated in the front rows diving for their lives in fear while clutching at one another,” during a screening of Iron Man 3. He even goes so far as to put the word “scary” in the title of the article.

We grin and take that as endearing. Is there a better thing than a film holding you in an emotional grip?

NY’s North Brother Island in 3D

May 21st, 2013 · 3D Content, Newsflash

northbrother_map

An article released today offers a peak at two explorers of New York’s abandoned North Brother Island’s 3D photo ebook.

North Brother Island: A History in 3D is available for $99 cents on the iPad. It features 65 3D photos of the island’s mysterious decrepit hospital and piers.

The ebook was created by husband and wife Matthew Schlanger and Laurie Needell, residents of Nyack, N.Y. It sounds like Schlanger and Needell may have sailed to North Brother Island with permission from the Parks department.

They brought with them a 3D camera. Schlanger took the photos and Needell wrote a history of the island, which used to house lepers and other quarantined people. The photos may be viewed as wiggle stereoscopy (particularly creepy-looking), anaglyphic, or static 2D.
