The new 55-inch Samsung OLED 3D TV is being called “the best picture quality ever.” And this is being said in the face of plasma, and even 4K TV.
The latest U.S. shipment of the Samsung KN55S9C curved OLED 3D TV is getting a warm reception for its contrast ratio (and considerably less expensive pricetag than the LG OLED). Contrast ratio is basically how black the screen remains when the TV is on. This OLED is apparently better than Panasonic’s ZT60 plasma, which has had perhaps the greatest contrast ratio until now.
But the thing that we don’t like is simply the curve. From what we’ve heard, the idea for the curve comes from some IMAX movies theaters. More recently, it was reported that the curve comes from compliance with standards designed to prevent it from falling over. Hmm.
But the curve is undoubtedly somewhat distracting and disorienting. It’s recently been stated that it even causes a slight “trapezoid effect,” with the sides sometimes seeming wider than the vertical center-line of the TV. We’re also still worried that it may cause an echo from voices in front of the TV.
