New films World War Z and Monsters University have presented the Hollywood Box Office with all-time revenue lows from the 3D showings of the films.
In fact, it’s been reported that only 31 percent of Monsters University’s $82 million-dollar debut came from 3D screenings, while roughly 34 percent of World War Z’s $66 million came from the format.
This is said to perhaps be due to current action films Man of Steel and Star Trek into Darkness taking up more of the limited amount of 3D theaters at the same time. Regardless, stock prices have actually dropped for 3D equipment manufacturer RealD because of this.
The 31 percent number for Monsters University is the lowest percentage for 3D ticket sales of any 3D animated feature since the explosion of 3D in recent years.
